Archbishop Chrysostomos expressed his support to Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday for the presidency of the Republic.
His statement was made after his meeting with Mr. Anastasiades, who stressed that the Church supported him during the pre-election period as well.
Archbishop appealed to fans and friends of DIKO to vote for Mr. Anastasiades taking into account the problems of the country “as this split is harmful”.
Asked if he is concerned that he will be accused for intervening in the election, Archbishop Chrysostomos said that "if politics had been normal, it would be wise for the Church to be restricted to the ecclesiastical context, but when part of our country is occupied, the Church cannot keep its mouth closed”.
Replying to another question, he clarified that he has not made any recommendations to Mr. Anastasiades for the appointment of Ministers.
On his part, Mr. Anastasiades, after expressing gratitude to the Church, noted that no one has the right to ignore its role. “In this critical time, the support of all is necessary”, he concluded.
