“With his press conference yesterday, the President of the Republic sparked gossips”, DISY MP, Socrates Hassikos stated, rejecting allegations that after the end of his term of office as Defence Minister in Clerides’ government he received an unemployment benefit.
“Yesterday, the Cypriot citizens expected to hear proposals and solutions for the stalemate of the top problems of our society, such as the economy”, he said.
“I never needed an unemployment benefit or an MP salary or a Minister salary. I pay €250 thousand in taxes every year”, he stressed.
Mr. Hassikos blamed the President for trying to sling mud at people. “The right for an unemployment benefit is used by several high-ranking officials, such as the Deputy Attorney General, Akis Papasavvas, for whom the President said nothing about.
He also urged Mr. Christofias to apologize publicly for the suspicions and to release the list of all Ministers from all governments so as to see who received the unemployment benefit and who didn’t.
He also referred to the appointment of his brother-in-law as consultant in the Presidential Palace and stressed that he could never have imagined that former President of the Republic, Glafkos Clerides would hold receptions and would charge the government.
