According to the latest data published by the statistical service, for the period January to August 2001, there was an increased number of tourist arrivals to the island totalling 1.942.526, with British visitors exceeding one million. The figures are well within the Ministry of Tourism's projections of increases between 7-10%.
Following the events of the 11 September however in the US, it is estimated that by the drop in arrivals for the winter season, the current year will overall equal the figures of 2000. It is anticipated that there will be around 90.000 arrivals for the winter season. Projections for the year had estimated an increase on last year of around 4-5%.
Cyprus has already taken measures to face the drop in tourist numbers, by preparing to launch a campaign well ahead of the 2002 tourist season, highlighting that Cyprus is a safe travel destination. The Trade, Industry & Tourism Ministry has submitted a list of measures to the Cabinet for approval.
