The proposals of the candidate for the Presidency, Demetris Christofias, cost €600 million per annum or €3 billion for the 5-year presidency.

Presenting the 10+1 proposals on economy and entrepreneurship on Mr. Christofias’ behalf, representative of his election team, Stavros Evagorou and former President of the Republic, Giorgos Vasileiou, said that the programme has been cost.

According to Mr. Evagorou, the annual growth rates of the revenues have been calculated and the targets for a disciplined economy have been set. “With high growth rates and savings that will be injected to the growth and improvement of the economy, AKEL will be able to fund Christofias’ programme”, he said.

“We can achieve our targets with less surplus or balanced national accounts”, he added.

Mr. Evagorou also made clear that no new taxation will be imposed and no other changes on the tax ratios will be made.

Similarly, former President, Giorgos Vasileiou said that the target of Mr. Christofias’ presidency is the best possible way to safeguard the system of economy.

Criticizing Mr. Papadopoulos’ government, he said that it failed to establish Cyprus as a link between Europe and the Middle East or Africa.

Mr. Christofias’ proposals secure high growth rates without the imposition of new taxes or the increase in tax ratios. The support of the SMEs via the provision of incentives and funds for the increase in productivity and the launch of new policies for the attraction of foreign investments are among the candidate’s main aims.

“Mr. Christofias will seek for the cooperation between the public and private sector to promote big infrastructure projects and will reform the tourist sector via a new strategic plan and significant tourist infrastructure projects”, he added.

According to Mr. Christofias’ proposals, Cyprus will become an international centre of services via the exploitation of its comparative advantages and the industrial sector will be upgraded. He will also introduce programmes for the support and improvement of all means of transportation, he will support the cooperatives and he will seek for a more flexible and disciplined growth via the existing system of economy and social cohesion.
