The biggest part of this year’s construction activity was shared out in four companies, according to official data released by StockWatch. The big construction companies received two thirds of the items for which the contracts for construction and road works were signed in 2009, while the remaining one third was shared out in twelve companies.

The biggest share of the signed items was secured by Miltiades Neophytou, which will receive - from one project only - the sum of €21.5 million or 21% of the total construction activity. The project concerns the widening of the road network next to GSP and the contracts were signed on Tuesday. The works will start in November and will last 28 months.

The biggest number of projects was secured by Iacovou Brothers (either via joint ventures or alone), which holds a significant share of €19.6 million or 19.1% of the signed items in 2009.

The company’s projects include the periodical maintenance of the road network in Nicosia (€1.8n), the periodical maintenance of Nicosia municipality (€3.8m), the construction of the northern by-pass of Paphos (€5.5m), the construction of the road near Idalion Industrial Area (€2.7m), the oncology ward in Nicosia (€1m) and the asphalting of A3 highway (€0.7m). The company will also undertake – via joint ventures – the maintenance of the big highways of Cyprus and the road network of Limassol municipality.

A significant part of the construction projects has been undertaken by Medcon, which signed six contracts, one of which is with Iacovou and Cybarco. The biggest contract is that for the Kalo Chorio – Zoopigi road of €6.7 million, while other projects concern the road to Ayia Napa (€2.6m), the periodical maintenance of the roads in Limassol (€1.5m), and the roads of Paphos municipality (€1.9m).

The fourth biggest part of the projects has been undertaken by Panayides Constructions, with two contracts of €11.3 million; that of the Police aviation ward at the airport of €7.9 million and that of the improvement of Paralimni – Derinia road.

A contract of €11.3 million has been received by the joint venture Lois Builders, Phoenix Constructions and Ergodinamiki Patron for the improvement of Platres – Prodromos road of €3.3 million.

The remaining part of constructions has been shared out in eleven companies.

Although 2009 is almost at its end, the distribution of the construction projects might change significantly from the outcome of the procedures for the big projects.

This year’s biggest contract, the widening of the road next to GSP, will be signed by the end of the year, after the clarification of the appeal lodged by Atlas Pantou. The project for the connection of the Limassol port with the Limassol – Paphos highway is currently at the evaluation stage. It will cost €24 million.
