Utility criterion for development projects

Transport Minister, Nicos Nicolaides stated on Wednesday that the government is re-examining its priorities based on criteria of development and social utility. In the light of the latest developments that were released by StockWatch in relation to the postponement of big projects, the Minister explained today that the government is currently evaluating all projects, taking into account the new economic conditions and the additional value that each project offers.
“No decision has been taken for the postponement of the development projects yet. The government’s development plans are under examination by the bi-ministerial committee on the basis of the philosophy that amid the economic crisis, the government must find a way to adopt its development program”, the Minister told StockWatch.
“Taking into account the economic crisis, all projects must be evaluated on the basis of the social and development utility so that those that have high index of development and social utility are promoted faster”, he said.
According to a StockWatch report released on Friday, the government postponed the procedures for the execution of projects if €350 million, which include the House building, the Cultural Mansion, the Oncology Centre in Limassol, the Nicosia Archeological Museum, the Transport Ministry and the building of the Public Works Department.
Mr. Nicolaides stressed that before the submission of the budget for 2010, all projects will be evaluated and as soon as the proposal is approved by the Council of Ministers, it will be led before the Parliament in September.
It is worth noting that the Ecologists today backed the government’s intention to postpone certain projects.
“We should avoid luxuries and mansions that do not serve any particular purpose. The needs for buildings can be satisfied via new and old buildings characterized by simplicity, usefulness and bio-climatic and energy planning”, it said”, they said.
The luxury projects include Eleftherias Square and the urgent ones the the Oncology Ward in Limassol, the improvement of the State Chemical Laboratory, the Oncology Ward in Nicosia.
