“Unemployment in the construction industry is out of control”, Chairman of the Contractors’ Federation, Sotos Lois stated on Saturday, speaking at the 10th conference of the federation.
At the same time, he urged the government to promote the full adoption of the development budget for 2010, relating the problems of the industry to the low degree of enforcement of the development expenditure in 2009.
He also recommended the promotion of the projects that had been postponed in 2009, such as the Head Office of the Post Office, the Public Works, the House building with the self-financing method.
“Every development project of €10 million postponed creates 200 unemployed in the construction industry and 200 more in the wider industry”, he stressed.
In his intervention, Finance Minister, Charilaos Stavrakis supported that the benefit for the construction industry is much bigger from the execution of small projects promoted by the government in several communities.
“A hundred small projects of €100 thousand create much more new job posts than one of €10 million”, he concluded.
