Tourist arrivals up by 2.9% for August

According to the latest data by Cystat, in August 2001 the number of arrivals covering all categories of travellers (including excursionists) reached 505.749 recording an increase of 3,9% compared to the corresponding month last year. For the period January-August 2001 arrivals of travellers reached 2.535.592 compared to 2.400.707 in the corresponding period of 2000, recording an increase of 5,6%.

Arrivals of tourists reached 371.536 in August 2001 compared to 356.686 in the corresponding month last year, recording an increase of 4,2%. For the period January-August 2001 arrivals of tourists reached 1.942.526 compared to 1.828.421 in the corresponding period of 2000, i.e. an increase of 6,2%.

The main countries of tourist arrivals in August 2001 were the United Kingdom with 57,0%, Germany with 5,5%, Russia with 5,3%, Sweden with 4,7%, Greece with 3,2%, Norway with 2,2% and Switzerland with 2,1%. The overwhelming majority, 81,5% of tourist arrivals was from countries of the European Union.

In August 2001, 112.084 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad compared to 98.395 in the corresponding month last year. For the period January-August 2001, 468.999 residents returned from a trip abroad compared to 416.908 in the corresponding period last year recording an increase of 12,5%.

In August 2001 the number of same-day visitors reached 20.663 of which 1.404 were same-day tourists and 19.259 excursionists. Long-term immigrants numbered 1.022 and short-term immigrants 373.
