According to CYSTAT data released on Monday, tourist arrivals in September 2006 dropped 2.1% to 296,532 against 302,833 in the corresponding month of 2005.
This drop is linked to the reduced arrivals from the British market. British tourist arrivals fell 3.9% to 170,708 against 177,653 in September 2005.
Tourist arrivals from France and Germany also recorded a drop of 33% and 17.4% respectively. “The drop in September is not alarming, however, we will look into the causes. This has been a tough year for tourism due to the war in Lebanon, which affected the last-minute reservations in August and September”, CTO Spokesman, Pantelis Ioannides told StockWatch.
Greek arrivals
On the other hand, Greek and Norwegian arrivals recorded an increase of 22.4% and 16.9% to 10,756 and 7,739 respectively. Tourist arrivals from Russia showed a slight increase of 3%.
In January-September 2006, tourist arrivals fell 2.3% to 1,951,173 against 1,997,310 in the corresponding period of 2005.
“It seems that 2006 will be negative in tourist arrivals but positive in tourist revenues. Through the current condition, we have realized that the prevailing conditions in the tourist sector are disappointing. The occupancy ratios and the overnight stays are low. The island’s tourist product is not competitive and the state must hasten the procedures for the completion of the infrastructure projects and the investment activities” General Manager of Tourist Business Association, Fedias Karis told StockWatch.
On the other hand, the CTO spokesman said that the increase in tourist revenues is encouraging. “This shows that the expenditure per capita has showed an increase”, he concluded.
