The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Nikos Rolandes, in the framework of the “Day of Tourism” celebrated worldwide, has attended an event organized by the Cyprus Tourism Organization today. Mr. Rolandes seized the opportunity to point out that the Government and himself have already decided to proceed with the Strategic Plan and he added that CTO has contributed effectively to the preparations of the specific Strategic Plan, which has as a main aim to make Cyprus a perfect tourist destination.
This year’s “Day of Tourism” message is: “Eco-tourism: the key to development”. Environment is one of the most valuable sources, not only for tourism in Cyprus but also for a quality life. The project will contribute to the protection of natural sources and ecosystems.
Mr. Rolandes stated that during the last four years and before the attack on September 11, tourism in Cyprus increased by 29% and revenues by 51.5%. “It is clear that if the attack of September 11 never occurred, last year’s tourist arrivals would have exceeded 2.8 million and revenues would have reached CYP 1.4 billion”.
Finally, the Minister reported that - according to recent data – this year’s tourism decline will be 12.5%, while the decline in revenues will reach 5%-7%.
