The Cyprus Tourist Organization is currently having consecutive meetings to ascertain the impacts on the Cyprus tourism after the referenda and the no vote of the G/C, which may result to the lifting of the embargo in the occupied territories and the ‘pop up’ of a new competitor on the island. The study, which has been prepared on behalf of the CTO for the possible impacts on the Cyprus tourism from the Annan Plan, contains scenarios based on the possibility of rejection of the said plan.
CTO Chairman, Fotis Fotiou told StockWatch that the Organization keeps already abreast with the developments on the T/C tourist product, while the CTO offices abroad have been instructed to give information concerning the promotion of the occupied areas as a tourist destination. Instructions have also been given to public relation offices. “We will try to prevent tourist agents from cooperating with the occupied territories. So long as northern Cyprus is under occupation, CTO’s mission is to attract tourists for the free part of Cyprus”, Mr. Fotiou said.
The CTO has already scheduled a number of meetings with agents from the tourist industry on Wednesday to exchange views on the tactic that the organization will adopt.
Fears for 2005
At the Press Conference for the exhibition “Travel 2004”, permanent General Secretary of the Tour Operators Association, Thanos Katsourides said that Cyprus tourism will not be significantly affected this summer, since reservations have already been made. “We do not expect to have flights to and from the occupied territories at present”, he stressed.
Similarly, Chairman of the Tour Operators Association, Adamos Mavrikios said that the G/C are pressured by the foreign tour operators to include the occupied territories in the tourist packages. “So far, the answer was ‘no’”, he emphasized.
“The Cyprus tourist industry expects the government and the EU decisions before it decides on the further steps it will take. For now, the G/C will not cooperate with the T/C due to the lack of a legal framework that will govern the security of the foreigners traveling to northern Cyprus”, Mr. Katsourides added.
