According to CYSTAT data released on Tuesday, tourist arrivals for June have suffered a significant decline of 10.6%. This drop compares favourably with the smaller decrease in tourist arrivals for May, but boosts pessimism for a further decline in the sector.

Tourist arrivals for June 2003 dropped to 262,100 compared to 293,192 in June 2002. This decline is attributable to the international economic recession and the stagnation in the European economy. In the period January – June 2003, tourist arrivals fell 12.3% to 892.655 against 1,017,385 in the corresponding period of 2002.

It is noted that tourist income for May dropped 23% compared to the corresponding period of 2002.

Tourism constitutes 22% of the Cyprus’ Gross Domestic Product, which is expected to grow for 2003
