The opening ceremony of the new Pafos International Airport took place in a festive atmosphere on Saturday, November 8, 2008. The Airport was inaugurated by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias in the presence of a number of officials, diplomats and other important personalities from Cyprus and abroad.
The guests were welcomed to the tunes from the Cyprus Police Philharmonic Band playing triumphal music. In continuation, His Eminence the Bishop of Pafos Georgios conducted the Blessings. The ceremony included salutations by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias, the Minister of Communications and Works, Mr. Nicos Nicolaides, the President of the Board of Directors of Hermes Airports Mr. Nicolas Shacolas and the Mayor of Pafos, Mr. Savvas Vergas. In addition, the Pafos Municipality children’s choir and young Mariam Venizelou created a very pleasant atmosphere with their songs. During the ceremony, a presentation of the technical specifications of the new Pafos International Airport was projected with the use of impressive audiovisual material. It is worth saying that the construction of this significant project was completed not only within the limits of the estimated budget but also within the specified deadlines, without a single day of delay.
The opening ceremony ended with a guided tour around the new terminal and a cocktail party. The new airport, a jewel for Cyprus, especially for the Pafos District, will start operating on Monday, November 17, 2008, marking the beginning of a new era for Cyprus’ airports.
It is expected that the comfortable and functional areas of the airport, with 28 check-in counters, 3 luggage delivery belts and 800 parking places will be able to host 2, 7 million passengers every year.
Very good planning coupled with the coordinated efforts of Hermes Airports and its partners, the Ministry of Works and Communications, the Ministry of Finance and all other government services involved, the new Pafos International Airport, the cost of which amounts to 126 million Euros, will be on par with other European airports.
Undoubtedly, the new Pafos International Airport is a project that all Cypriots can feel proud of. A new era for the Airports of our country has just begun!
