Major issue of today’s financial press is the effects that the UN peace plan will have on Cyprus economy.
The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “Economic effects” mentions that Annan’s plan is not fair as far as refugees’ compensations are concerned. According to the report, if the UN plan is to become the basis for further negotiation, then the government has to “demand” a compensation payment to all refugees for having lost their possessions and also for not being able to use their land since 1974. This has been consolidated by the Court of European Justice, but it is not mentioned in the UN plan.
Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the bounce back cheques and the black list that is to become even longer.
The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “Dangers for economy” highlights that the changes in the UN peace plan are expected to be “huge and –unfortunately – not in favour of citizens’ financials”. Then, the European Union with 500m people will work as a single economy, while Cyprus economy with less than a million will be based on two economic speeds. “Despite government’s will to join EMU, this will be repealed and Cyprus will end up a second and third class country”.
Elsewhere the newspaper deals with the promotion of loan consolidation, granted by loan trustees, Commercial banks and other Cooperative organizations to municipalities.
The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” under the title “Bounce back cheques and black list: Who and Why?” contains part of the full document of Guidelines of the Central Record of Information and the administrative commission, publicized by the Central Bank yesterday.
Elsewhere, the newspaper points out that the Parliament has proposed a new institution for the consumers’ protection, based on the Competition Committee.
