Taxi drivers started a strike yesterday protesting against the possible issuance of additional licenses by the Licensing Authority. Following a decision of the Ministry of Transport, Communications & Works yesterday to issue temporary licenses to 1,800 rural taxis to accommodate the demand by tourists for service throughout Cyprus, striking taxi drivers attempted to close off Larnaca Airport, causing confusion and traffic jams. Violent episodes also took place which resulted in arrests, minor injuries to strikers and police officers as well.
Taxi drivers are claiming that issuance of additional licenses will prove catastrophic in view of reduced tourism to the island this year. The Licensing Authority is considering issuing between 150-300 new licenses. Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stated that taxi drivers from the three areas being considered for the issuance of new licenses did not participate in the strike. No additional licenses will be issued for the Larnaca Airport area as there seems to be an excess of taxis already.
Strikers decided to drive to Nicosia today to submit their demands to the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christophias. The action is expected to create traffic jams around midday in the capital.
