DISY Vice President, Lefteris Christoforou criticized strongly the government on Monday for the increase in the consumer tax on fuel. In his statements to the Parliament, Mr. Christoforou said that the government imposed an “unprecedented increase” on fuel without taking any offsetting measure. “Fuel taxes reach 50% of their price”, he said.
“Although all countries around the world and especially in the EU took certain measures to support their economies, the government takes anti-development measures with a delay of two years”, he said.
“This is the correct terminology for the measures, since they bring no development”, he said.
Mr. Christoforou supported that the increase of 34% on fuel prices is unprecedented. “The Cypriot consumer will pay 55 cents per litre as a tax to the government, that is, more than 50%”, he noted.
“What is even more important is that the current government took no offsetting measures to support the Cypriot citizens”, Mr. Christoforou concluded.
