Demetris Syllouris, member of the Solidarity Movement, is the new President of the House of Representatives.
Syllouris, former member of the ruling Democratic Rally (DISY), who left the party in 2004 to form the European Party which recently merged with the new party Solidarity Movement, was elected with the 18 votes of DISY and his party`s three votes.
Born at the Nicosia village of Potamia on 27 July 1953, Syllouris studied Civil Engineering at the North East London Polytechnic, he first entered the House as a representative of Nicosia constituency under the banner of the Democratic Rally Party (DISY)-Liberals Coalition 1991-2001, under the banner of DISY 2001-2004, independent 2004-2005 and under the banner of the European Party since 2005.
He has served as DISY`s Parliamentary Spokesman from June 2001-May 2004 and was a member of the Member of the Committee of Selection, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Trade and Industry, deputy Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, second Vice-chairman of the delegation of the House to the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). He also served as Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Institutions, Merit and the Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) and member of the delegation of the House to the Conference of Community and European Affairs Committees of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC).
During his political career, he was the secretary of the DISY Youth Organisation (NEDISY) and DISY Enlightenment Committees as well as the Nicosia District Organisational Secretary of DISY and General Secretary of the Party. He served as observer to the European Parliament (2003) and member of the Political Group of the European People’s Party and was Member of the National Council, the supreme advisory body to the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem.
A member of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), Syllouris is married and has three daughters and a son.
