STEK criticized strongly the Electricity Authority of Cyprus for its decision to cut off electricity supply to certain big hotels due to increased demand. In an announcement released on Friday, STEK supported that EAC’s policy is destructive. “Is this the most effective way to jeopardize the future of our tourism, despite the spending of millions of pounds by the government for the attraction of tourists in Cyprus?”, STEK wondered.
STEK also accused EAC for cutting off electricity supply to certain hotels only. “This unequal treatment has aroused strong feelings to the hotel industry. EAC must, therefore, investigate the cases of hotels and houses that they intervened illegally in the power network”, the announcement added.
The Association also outlined that the change of EAC’s policy is a solution and the Authority must respect the need to protect our tourism from actions that jeopardize it. “Instead of the easy but catastrophic target of hotels, the Authority should have cut off the air conditioning supply to governmental services and other businesses. These could have changed their timetable”, it concluded.
