The State Library in Nicosia has been converted into a state warehouse, DISY MP, Efthimios Diplaros said, stressing that the library areas are inappropriate due to the huge piles of dusted books on the floor and the corners of the building.
“The books that have been lost reach 700 and this number might include books of big historic importance and value”.
After the talks on the regulations that govern the operation of the Library and determine the rights and obligations of the members at the House Education Committee, Mr. Diplaros said that “there is no state library but what it is next to the Nicosia City Council is a state warehouse with books that are not computerized”.
“Many books have been stolen, while others have been lost since they were never returned by the members”, he added.
Mr. Diplaros also said that there is a lack of staff.
Finally, he stressed the need for a change of the regulations that govern the Library so that the penalties are dissuasive.
