Sony Ericsson, the world's fifth largest maker of mobile handsets today announced its first profits since it launched in October 2001. The company said it made a €39 million (£26m) pre-tax profit in the third-quarter, reversing the loss of €116m (£78m) for the same time last year.

The results came in ahead of analysts' expectations. The Swedish company also predicted it would make another profit, albeit slightly smaller, in the fourth quarter.

"Volume and sales are expected to continue to grow during the fourth quarter, but due to an increased proportion of lower priced models in the product mix we anticipate it may be difficult to sustain the current level of profitability in the next quarter," the company said in a statement.

The company benefited from strong sales of the T610 handset in GSM markets, and other models in both the PDC and CDMA standards in Japan.

Despite higher sales Sony Ericission's market share actually slipped to 6 per cent in the third-quarter. Its main rivals, Motorola and Samsung have both benefited from strong sales growth.
