The area of the new Interior Ministry and the cost of construction will be reduced, after instructions given by Interior Minister, Neoclis Silikiotis, when the Public Works Department estimated that the cost would reach €194 million.
According to “Phileleftheros” newspaper, Mr. Silikiotis’ aim is to reduce the cost to €60 - €70 million, including the expropriation of land on which the building will be built.
Of the three plots in the Nicosia city center, the most suitable is that of “Panayides Constructions” but the company does not intend to sell it. If it insists to the end, the government will expropriate the plot, the value of which has been estimated at €20 million. The Company estimated its value at €30 million and wishes to develop the plot itself.
At first, the thought was the owner company to buy the building on condition that it would build it itself. The company was not negative but reactions concerned the choice of the specific plot and the government invited tenders (2 more plots were tracked down).
The area and the other factors that were taken into account show that Panayides property is the most suitable. In this case, the contractors said that if the company undertook the project, the treatment would be more favourable.
The Interior Minister asked for the opinion of the Audit Service and decided to expropriate the plot and invite tenders for all contractors that fulfill the criteria.
According to the newspaper, Mr. Silikiotis said that the expropriation procedures will start soon. As for the capacity of the building, he said that the twelve conference rooms are too many and must be reduced, while the initial provision for the construction of extra space in case that the staff increases by 30% is regarded as excessive.
