Egypt supports Cyprus with determination, the President of the Cyprus Parliament Yiannakis Omirou said, after having been assured on Tuesday by the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that his country will support Cyprus over matters related to the exploitation of hydrocarbons.
The President of Parliament told the press he was content with his contacts in the capital of Egypt during the last two days. On Tuesday, before leaving Cairo, Omirou was received by the Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismael and later by President el-Sisi.
“Following the meetings with the Prime Minister and President Sisi I want to stress that Egypt stands by Cyprus with determination, primarily when it comes to the struggle of Cyprus to end occupation and restore the human rights and freedoms of our people” Omirou said, noting that Egypt supports Cyprus at international level, but also in the framework of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation and the relationships developed in the framework of the trilateral cooperation of Cyprus, Egypt and Greece.
“President Sisi assured me that in the framework of the agreements signed between the two countries, Egypt is ready to support in every way Nicosia`s actions” meaning, he added, the explorations for hydrocarbons which in case they are successful Egypt will support Cyprus in exploiting reserves located in the area adjacent to the giant Egyptian gas field “Zhor”.
The President of the Parliament stressed that Egypt not only remains a friendly country, but relationships with Cyprus are upgraded continuously for the benefit of the two peoples.
