President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said Friday that Cyprus has significantly enhanced the security level in critical infrastructures following the developments in the region.
In statements to journalists, before attending the IRENA Conference in Nicosia, the President described the situation as tragic saying that Cyprus is in contact with all the neighboring states.
He said that he participated earlier in a meeting of the European People's Party, where they discussed the situation, while earlier he received a phone call from Acting United States Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland who thanked him on behalf of the American President for the Republic of Cyprus' assistance.
He recalled that the National Plan ESTIA has been activated and is in full operation adding that "we have requests from several countries, we are responding and will continue to respond".
In addition, the President said that he might have a telephone communication with the Israeli Prime Minister in the evening.
We are monitoring the developments, he said, expressing his concern about the situation.
We hope that a way out will soon be found, President Christodoulides stressed and said that the situation is affecting the entire region.
Asked about the measures taken in Cyprus the President of the Republic recalled that a meeting of the National Security Council took place on Thursday while he has convened a meeting of the National Council on Monday to brief the members on the measures taken.
"I asked yesterday the competent authorities to further strengthen security measures, we are doing everything possible, we are monitoring the situation, whatever needed will be done so that there is no negative development. Especially in critical infrastructures, the level of security has been significantly enhanced," he concluded.
