Romanian-Bulgarian tourist arrivals surge

Tourist arrivals from Bulgaria and Romania, the two countries that joined the European Union on 1/1/2007, have recorded an impressive increase. According to CYSTAT data released on Friday, Romanian tourist arrivals in January 2007 stood at 1,037 against 180 in the corresponding month of 2006, while Bulgarian arrivals reached 564 compared to 188 last year.

Arrivals at -5.5%

Total tourist arrivals for the same month dropped 5.5% to 51.848 against 54.875 in January 2006.

This is mostly linked to the British arrivals, which slumped 13.7% (4 thousand) to 25,435 compared to 29,469 in January 2006. Similarly, tourist arrivals from Germany and Russia fell 11% (466) and 15.6% (302) respectively.

On the other hand, Greek tourist arrivals surged 13.3% (813) to 6,944 against 6,131 last year.
