European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders has welcomed the adoption by the Cyprus' House of Representatives of the legislative measures to strengthen the rule of law and combat corruption, stressing the importance of ensuring the practical implementation of these measures.

The European Commissioner, who is visiting Cyprus, had a meeting on Thursday with President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou in the framework of visits to prepare for the European Commission's fourth annual report on the Rule of Law in the EU.

According to a press release issued by the Parliament, during the meeting Demetriou referred to a series of legislations passed by the Parliament to strengthen the rule of law and combat corruption.

Reynders welcomed the adoption by the Parliament of the legislative measures to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption, stressing the importance of ensuring the practical implementation of these measures, in order to benefit the citizens.

He emphasized the need for a more efficient supervision of the implementation of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights as well as the judicial decisions at the national level. In addition, the European Commissioner underlined the importance of implementing EU sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Demetriou assured the European Commissioner of the Parliament's readiness to contribute to the monitoring of the implementation of the measures adopted, so that through the continuous dialogue with the executive power, gaps and weaknesses can be identified.

She also stressed that the Republic of Cyprus as an EU member state, but also as a country experiencing the consequences of the Turkish invasion and occupation, is in line with the European sanctions framework.
