Parliamentary Committees start work after the summer holidays on Monday while the first plenary has been set for Friday September 9.
In a letter to parliamentary party leaders or representatives House of Representatives President Demetris Syllouris informs them he has set the plenary for Friday, September 9, at 1000 hrs.
In a written statement he points out that plenaries will no longer be held on Thursday afternoon but rather on Friday morning, explaining that in this way the parliament will make the best of all five working days of the week.
He also sets out a plan according to which parliamentary committees will meet in three different zones and have two hour long sessions.
On Tuesday August 20, Parliamentary Committee of Employment, Welfare and Social Welfare is set to discuss AKEL legislative proposals on maternity protection. Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Committee meets with Energy Ministery Yiorgos Lakkotrypis to be briefed on a bill encouraging the use of renewable energy sources and Scrutiny of Public Expenditure will hold a meeting with former Cyprus Central Bank Governor Athanassios Orphanides.
The Parliamentary Committee on Education will continue where it left off before the summer holidays as regards a regulation on secondary education and on the Pancyprian Exams students have to take to be admitted to tertiary education institutions in Cyprus and Greece.
On Wednesday Legal Affairs Committee meets to discuss among others a bill on criminalising certain expressions of racist and xenophobic behaviour. On Thursday, Agriculture Committee will be briefed by government officials on the decision to abolish the Cyprus Agricultural Insurance Organisation, the Defence Committee will meet to discuss its forthcoming programming, while the Parliamentary Committee of the Interior will continue discussion on a bill to reform the local administration.
On Tuesday September 6, the Parliamentary Committee on External and European Affairs meets with Slovak Ambassador in Nicosia to discuss the priorities of the Slovakian EU Council Presidency.
