The government’s decision to postpone construction and road works due to the increased deficits in the state coffers has aroused strong feelings. DISY Vice President, Nicos Tornaritis criticized strongly the government today for the Transport Minister’s statements that “significant development and infrastructure projects will be deleted from the budget or will be transferred”.
Mr. Tornaritis stated that a year ago DISY had said that we were standing before a serious economic crisis and that the priorities should be reexamined. “Nothing like that happened”, he added.
“There are far-sighted projects that the government should not have postponed such as the Museum, the Paphos-Polis Chrysohous Road and the Cultural Palace”.
“Cyprus will undertake the EU rotating Chairmanship in two years. Where will we host our European counterparts?”, Mr. Tornaritis wondered.
Mr. Tornaritis said that DISY agrees that there is an economic crisis but tax evasion must be eliminated. Every euro getting out of the state coffers must be inspected.
“We do not support that more money should be given, because it’s been years now that we spend a lot for education. What we are saying is that we should examine seriously where this money goes”, he concluded.
