Total employment in the broad public sector reached 75,714 in the second quarter of 2024, marking an increase of 2,388 persons (3.3%) compared to the same period in 2023, announced on Friday the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Employment in the General Government sector was 70,011, while Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies employed 5,703 people.
Within the General Government, which includes the central government, non-profit organizations, and local authorities, employment levels were 54,744, 10,680, and 4,587 respectively. The rise in central government employment—up by 2,426 persons (3.9%)—was largely driven by an increase in educational service staff following the end of service outsourcing in the Ministry of Education's support programs.
Compared to the previous quarter, overall employment in the broad public sector remained stable. However, employment in local authorities rose by 123 persons (2.8%), while slight declines were observed in central government (-0.1%) and publicly owned enterprises (-1.6%).
