The Transport Ministry is taking all necessary measures for the development projects of half billion, however, the execution of the big projects is transferred to late 2009 or – in certain cases – in 2012. According to figures released at a press conference given by Transport Minister, Nicos Nicolaides today, the Ministry has accepted the tender for only €12.1 million of the total projects of €450 million. In the next few weeks, the tenders that will be submitted will be for €19.6 million.
All other projects, including the Saittas – Limassol Road that will cost €150 million, and the new House building of €100 million, are in the phase of tender invitation. The tenders that will be invited in March will be for projects of €79 million, while the tender for the Archeological Museum (€80 million) will be invited in December 2009.
During the press conference, Mr. Nicolaides announced the acceptance of tender of three projects of €12.1 million, including the improvement of the north Paphos by-pass (second phase) that will cost around €6.3 million, the anti-corrosive projects at Potima – Paphos seafront of €800 thousand and the projects concerning the periodical maintenance of highways of €5 million.
The tenders that will be invited in the next few days will include the Conference Centre and Filoxenia. The works will start in December 2009. It is about two buildings that will host the European rotating Presidency in the second half of 2012. The project will cost €9 million and will be completed in 20 months.
“The construction of Limassol port – Paphos Road is also very important, will cost €65 million and will be co-financed with the EU. To hasten the procedures, the acceptance of the tender will be separated in thee sections”, the Minister said.
The first will be invited in March with a cost of €28 million.
In the same month, the government will also invite tenders for the conversion of the Nicosia – Limassol Road into a six-lane highway. The cost will reach €35 million.
In light of the policy for the strengthening of economy, the Ministry will dispose the sum of €6.8 million for smaller infrastructure projects in 352 communities across Cyprus.
As for the big projects, the operations will not start before the end of 2009 (2012 for Saittas road). Although the tender for the House building has already been invited, the project will commence in December 2009 and will last 36 months.
“The Ministry in cooperation with the public works will take all necessary measures so as to promote the development of certain projects. Our main aim is to increase the degree of the budget’s implementation from 65-70% to 80%, Mr. Nicolaides concluded.
