Procedures at the Ministry of Interior to hold the June 9 elections are in the final stage, Head of the Electoral Service, Menelaos Vassiliou, told CNA, assuring that everything will be ready on the day of the elections, which are expected to be held without any particular problems.
"We are in the final stage", said Vassiliou, noting that the printing of the ballots by the government printing office is completed, the ballot boxes are being set up, seminars for the Presiding Officers have been completed, while the delivery of the ballot boxes to the Presiding Officers will begin in the coming days. "We have been dealing mainly with procedural issues in recent days," Vassiliou said.
The first results for the June 9 elections will be known around 19:30 local time on Sunday, while the final results will be given on Monday morning around 0700 to 0800 local time.
The number of voters is 705,357, 568,608 Cypriots and 834 Turkish Cypriots. 21,640 are European citizens voting for local government elections, 11,840 are Europeans voting for the European elections and 103,269 Turkish Cypriots residing in the Turkish occupied areas and voting for the European elections.
Vassiliou noted that around 9,000 people will staff the 1,845 polling stations. Abroad, and specifically in Greece, the United Kingdom and Belgium, 17 centers will operate in 13 cities. He also said around 3,000 police officers would be deployed on election day.
The approved budget for the election expenditure is €6,650,000.
The sorting of votes will be done at the local polling stations while all proclamations will be held on Tuesday, 11 June.
Asked about the accessibility of people with disabilities to polling stations, Vassiliou said that everything that had to be done was done so that there would be no problem.
"Inspections were carried out in the areas by crews of the Technical Services of the District Offices, and where there were no ramps, temporary ramps were installed to make the areas accessible".
Asked if someone can vote with an expired ID, Vassiliou replied in the affirmative, noting that expired ID is used only for identification purposes.
He pointed out that the peculiarity of the June 9 elections lies in the fact that for the first time there will be eight elections simultaneously.
The elections are held for new members of the European Parliament, Presidents of the District Organisations of Local Government, elected at District level, Mayors, elected at Municipality level, Deputy Mayors, elected at the level of Municipal District, Municipal Councilors, elected at the level of Municipal District, members of the School Boards, elected at Municipality level, Community Leaders, elected at community level and members of the Community Councils, elected at community level.
Any citizen of the Republic or a citizen of another EU Member State who has reached the age of 18 by the date of the elections, shall be entitled to vote, provided that they are registered on the relevant electoral roll.
