The major issues that dominate today’s financial press are particularly few just like every Monday.
Specifically, the “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” deals with Cyprus shipping and its prospects, in the face of Cyprus accession in the EU, stressing the importance of competitiveness of the registry of ships and as a base for international shipping activities. According to the report, during the Cyprus-EU negotiations, the need for maintenance of competitiveness was emphasized, while the message for an imminent EU benefit was fairly clear. The report also highlights that 15.9% of the international merchant marine hoists a flag of a EU member state, while Cyprus’ accession in the EU will enable European merchant marine to surpass the 20% of the international merchant marine.
The newspaper also mentions that the new shipping strategic prepared by the European Union in 1996 concerning the introduction of a new type of taxation for the EU shipping companies - based on ships’ capacity and not the revenues - is an encouraging prospect for the maintenance of Cyprus competitiveness.
Elsewhere, the newspaper quotes that “Greek businessmen vote for Ertogan”, reckoning that the new Turkish Prime Minister will deal with the issues of foreign imports and Turkish enterprising environment “in a friendly way”.
The newspaper “Simerini” points out that the CSE staff appears to be particularly annoyed ahead of government’s and parliament’s policy over the issues of construction of a privately-owned CSE building and CSE’s privatization, that came up once again in a letter sent by the Trade Union president to a Parliament member.
Elsewhere, the newspaper refers to Paralimni’s investors and their charges before SEC against the company Avacom Net Services.
