Major issue of the financial press today is the speech of the Minister of Finance, Takis Klerides, over the State Budget of 2003 before the plenary session of the Legislative Body.
The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “Klerides: confirmation by the EU” states that the Minister of Finance has proceeded to a pre-election detailed account of government’s achievements within the last ten years.
Mr. Klerides highlighted that according to the European Commission’s Report, Cyprus economy is ready to join EU, stressing economy’s progress during 1997-2001. The Minister also referred to EU’s positive evaluations about the Pre-accession Economic Program and Cyprus’ attempts to reduce budget deficit against GNP, at a period that “the member-states of EU will probably not be able to retain budget deficits in the context of the Maastricht Treaty”.
Elsewhere, the newspaper mentions that the American SEC had visited Cyprus two weeks ago in order to investigate ACLN and BDO Audit Firm case.
The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “Economy is threatened” has chosen another aspect of Mr. Klerides’ speech. Specifically, the newspaper quotes Klerides’ statement that “a possible American intervention in Iraq will repeal Cyprus economy”. He also added that the slowdown of EU growth rate affects Cyprus and explained the variation of estimates over growth rate of 2003 that will reach 2.3%.
The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” under the title “Auspicious prospects threatened by ” mentions that although the Minister of Finance praised Cyprus economy in terms of growth rate, inflation, budget deficits etc, he made it clear that this may repeal in case USA invades Iraq.
