There should be an immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday.

Replying to press questions about a meeting he had earlier in Nicosia with the UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, the President said that they were working together to implement the maritime humanitarian corridor from Cyprus to Gaza.

He added that this is not the only option and that there are other options as well. He also pointed out that considering the serious humanitarian needs, there should be an immediate humanitarian assistance to the civilians.

The President welcomed the presence of the UN coordinator in Cyprus and added that she will be traveling to Israel too and then will inform the UN Secretary General. He also expressed hope that soon conditions will allow the maritime humanitarian corridor to function normally.

He said that the needs of the civilians are increasing and there should not be any political motivations that make it difficult to implement these options.

The President noted that the criterion for any initiatives, such as Nicosia’s proposal for the maritime corridor, should be the needs of the people in Gaza, which are clearly becoming greater and more urgent day by day.

In another question he said that Cyprus is in cooperation with Britain and the Netherlands, the country of origin of the representative of the Secretary General, the EU and all countries that could contribute in this direction.
