The recent European elections, discussions concerning the election of the new Presidents of the European Commission and Council, and the situation in Ukraine, are among issues to be discussed at the European Council meeting that begins on Tuesday in Brussels, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades has said.
Speaking before the meeting of the European People`s Party leaders, President Anastasiades noted that Cyprus` position on the issue of Ukraine remains unchanged and expressed hope that the situation would be alleviated so that further sanctions could be avoided.
Regarding the election of the Presidents of the Commission and the Council, President Anastasiades said the issue would be discussed by the EPP and then by the Council.
Asked if he would be informing his counterparts about the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, the President said he would.
Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Talks are currently being held with an aim to reunify the island.
