The electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus was at the center of a meeting between the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens, on Thursday, with both sides confirming their interest and political commitment to the implementation of the project.
According to a Presidency announcement, President Christodoulides informed the Greek Prime Minister about the relevant decision of the Council of Ministers during the meeting of the Council of Ministers on 17 September 2024. At the same time, he "confirmed the political commitment of the Republic of Cyprus to participate in the share capital of the project as soon as possible, after the due diligence study and the establishment of a special purpose company, for which advanced consultations are ongoing with third countries.
The two leaders, it is added, also discussed the prospects for the resumption of Cyprus talks, developments in the Greek-Turkish dialogue, as well as regional developments, with emphasis on the role of Greece and Cyprus as pillars of stability in the region.
Moreover, it is noted that the two leaders discussed their upcoming visit to New York, in the context of their participation in the High Level Week of the 79th UN General Assembly, as well as their meetings with the UN Secretary-General and with foreign leaders.
In this context, the President of the Republic "reaffirmed his full readiness and political will to resume negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem, always on the basis of the UN resolutions and decisions, the principles and values of the EU while building on the acquis of the dialogue to date."
