The competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, together with the Law Office, will examine a European Court of Human Rights ruling concerning Syrian asylum seekers, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday, while noting that the Republic of Cyprus has proved that it fulfils its commitments stemming from this specific issue
Earlier on Tuesday the European Court of Human Rights found in a judgement that Cyprus violated the European Convention on Human Rights when in 2020 authorities returned to Lebanon the two Syrian citizens who wanted to apply for asylum.
“What I want to reiterate is that the Republic of Cyprus has shown in many cases not only that it undertakes its obligations arising from this particular issue, but because we know as a country, as a homeland under occupation, what it means to be a refugee, what it means to be forced to leave your home, we are certainly doing more” he said before attending an event at the state broadcaster, CyBC, in Nicosia.
“I repeat, we will examine it and we will state our position” he concluded.
