Power supply in Nicosia was restored at 12.30 pm.
The blackout occurred at 11:18 am and in his statements to StockWatch, EAC spokesman Yiannis Tsouloftas said that the damage started from the line between Athalassa and Alambra and spread to other substations due to equipment failure, indicating that the damage is not attributable to the human factor.
“This is a local problem in Nicosia and has no relation to the adequacy of production or the Vassiliko Station, which is working normally”, Mr. Tsouloftas said.
The power outage caused great congestion in the main streets of Nicosia as all traffic lights were off. Offices and shops as well as services in the governmental and semi-governmental sector paralyzed.
The Fire Department received several calls for people trapped in elevators.
