Passenger traffic at the two international airports of Cyprus hit a new record high in 2015, according to the communications manager of the airports.
Adamos Aspris told StockWatch that despite the negative start presented earlier in the year, 2015 "ended with a spectacular performance, achieving the best results recorded to date, at both Larnaca and Paphos airports."
Specifically, in 2015, 7,608,655 passengers in total travelled through the two international airports of the country. This figure corresponds to a 3.6% increase compared to 7,345,214 passengers in 2014.
About 5.3 mn passengers travelled through the international airport of Larnaca, a number that translates to an increase of 1.6% and another 2.2 mn passengers traveled through the international airport of Paphos, a figure that translates into an increase of 8,6%.
According to Mr. Aspris, Cyprus airports were called to overcome two major challenges in 2015.
The first one was the closure of Cyprus Airways and the second one was the reduction of the expected number of arrivals from Russia.
These two events had initially marked the total removal of about 1.5 mn seats from flights to and from Cyprus.
"The recovery effort on both fronts was very successful, and made the rapid replacement of Cyprus Airways routes by other airlines possible, while a significant increase in arrivals was recorded from existing and new markets such as the United Kingdom (+5%) , Greece (+16%), Israel (+ 36.1%), Germany (+ 16.2%), Austria (+ 15.6%), Ukraine (+ 30.8%) and Poland (+ 34.2%).
Moreover, the network of Cypriot airports was further enriched with the arrival of new airlines and the introduction of new routes" as Mr. Aspris noted.
He added that today, more than 70 airlines are operating at Larnaca and Paphos airports, connecting Cyprus with more than 110 destinations in 40 countries.
He also noted that Hermes Airports, continues to invest in significant services for travelers, introducing new innovations in Cypriot airports, such as the use of the electronic boarding pass, the fast boarding service and the electronic pre-booking of parking space, all through the official website of the Cypriot international airports.
According to a press release issued today by Hermes Airports, Wes Porter, Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Airports, said in a statement that “applying an effective strategy, Hermes has managed to surpass the initial adverse conditions. We are happy with these results, however we believe that the potential is much higher particularly with regards the tourism arrivals on the island and the further increase of the passenger traffic”.
