The Cyprus legislature approved by majority a proposal for a law banning the privatization of Cyta and the Electricity Authority (EAC) until the end of December 2017.
The communist AKEL, socialist EDEK, Democratic Party, the Alliance of Citizens and the Ecologists voted in favor of the proposal.
The conservative DISY and the European Party voted against.
Athena Kyriakidou from the Democratic Party abstained.
The telecommunications and electricity authorities were to be privatized as part of the adjustment program, that ended in March 2016.
Cyprus was expecting to reduce its public debt by about ten percentage points with these privatizations.
The only privatization that went forward during the three-year adjustment program was that of the Limassol Port, which was given to consortiums led by international logistics firms.
