Investment Banking: What now?

Dr Stelios Markoulis, will speak at a CIIM Public Lecture on Friday, 17 February at 6.00 p.m. at the CIIM Premises in Nicosia regarding the effects of the financial crisis on the global investment banking industry and explain why the independent investment banking model did not do so well.
In this lecture Professor Markoulis will focus on what has been happening in emerging markets in the past few years, and why the investment banking industry is likely to prosper in these parts of the world, in the years to come.
He will talk about the main investment banking lines of business (initial public offerings, private equity, mergers and acquisitions) and present recent trends which emphasize the importance of emerging market economies.
Finally, he will focus on what the future of the industry is likely to be paying attention to issues such as increased regulation regarding capital requirements and risk taking practices.
Stelios Markoulis is the Head of Personal Banking and Investments at the Retail Banking Division of Laiki Marfin Bank. Previous to this appointment, he was for twelve years at several positions of the Bank’s Investment Banking Division, including Head of Investment Banking and Senior Corporate Finance Manager. He held a research position at Cass Business School in London where his interests focused in the areas of finance, initial public offerings and the macroeconomic and microeconomic determinants of stock returns.
He has a number of publications in internationally refereed academic journals and books and is the co-author of the book “Risk and Return in Transportation and other US and Global Industries.” In addition to his teaching role at the CIIM, he also holds an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow position at Cass Business School London.
