There can be no discrimination between Cypriot and foreign players of the casino, said Secretary to the President Constantinos Petrides.

Mr. Petrides commented on an amendment adopted by the plenary, which determines the entry criteria of Cypriots players including the examination of their tax file and the issue of a special identity.

According to the deputy minister, no provisions that could jeopardize the project can be implemented, adding that this is permitted by law.

In relation to the amendment which provides for the operation of a resort casino and four satellite casinos, Mr. Petrides noted that this provision does not change the philosophy of the casino and is not jeopardizing the viability of the whole project.

Regarding the amendment according to which the investor is not allowed to use state land, the deputy minister stated that this will not be an obstacle, stressing that "there is enough land in which the investor will have to decide according to his own model”.

“There are many investors looking at different parts of Cyprus. Everywhere there is private land, the state does not want to get involved in a business process in connection with the investor”, he noted.

He also said that the investor himself can choose to agree the price or how to obtain or lease a property.

He noted that the government in September will invite tenders, so that the successful investor is given a license in 7-8 months.

Responding to questions, he noted that from the contacts that the government had in previous months through institutionalized and transparent procedures with potential investors is that there will be interest from large investors as well.

“Right now”, he said, “we are at a stage that we have to wait 1-2 months to see whether the interest that we expect will be translated into real interest”, he concluded.
