Transport Minister, Nicos Nicolaides stressed the government’s readiness to support shipping via specific programs.
According to the CNA, in his statements after the opening ceremony of “Shipping Cyprus 2009” in Limassol, the Minister said that the Cypriot shipping has a leading role and the government’s intention is to promote it even more via specific programs, positive plans, new package measures, incentives, infrastructures and a wide range of services and actions necessary for the expansion of its role worldwide.
“Due to the economic crisis, we have to intensify our efforts and to boost the sector, which can contribute to our way out from it”, he said.
“It is a sector with prospects and despite Cyprus’s good standards, we believe that via the good cooperation with the private sector, the companies that are active in Cyprus and the actions that have bee taken we can attract more partners and to upgrade the Cypriot fleet, which ranks third among the EU so that Cyprus contributes to all organizations and to the determination of the global shipping policy”, he added.
“The crisis in shipping is boosted by the global economic crisis, however, I am convinced that with our know-how, the experiences, the past and the political will that we have we can tackle the economic crisis the soonest possible”, he stressed.
Referring to the “Shipping Cyprus 2009”, the Minister said that it is a conference with tradition and international status, one of the most important conferences in the world. “It is a conference that will be used for the achievement of our goals – our country’s goals – which is the promotion of the island’s shipping”, he concluded.
