The new members of the House of Representatives who were elected in Sunday`s elections will be sworn in on 2 June.
The House members will also elect the new Speaker on the same day.
According to the House Director General Vasiliki Anastasiadou, the House services are preparing to welcome the new MPs elected by the people, who represent eight political parties.
Voting for a new Speaker will take place if there are more than one candidates. If simple majority is not secured, the House will implement the 1985 decision which provides for a three -step process. Should the first two stages fail to elect the House Speaker, he or she will be elected by a relative majority.
In Sunday`s elections, the ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) party got 30.69% of the vote, followed by the main opposition AKEL party with 25.67%, the Democratic Party (DIKO) with 14.49% and the Socialist EDEK with 6.18%. The electorate also voted in Citizens` Alliance, Solidarity (Alilegii), the Environmentalist Movement-Citizens` Cooperation and ELAM. Abstention was registered at 33.26%.
