During the last meeting of the Cabinet, the decision was taken for the creation of an Internal Control Council, highlighting the government’s focus on control on public service and alignment with international practices already implemented by the European Commission.
Internal control is an independent, objective and advisory activity designed to add value and improve operations of an organisation, offering a systematic evaluation approach and improvement of the performance of management and internal control systems.
The Internal Control Council will observe and advise on improvement of operations of the Internal Management Control department and of the General Audit Department of the Republic and will also be monitoring the response of the administration of various ministries, services and departments on matters raised by the Internal Management Control office.
The Internal Control Council will be comprised of five members, chaired by the Minister of Finance, two ministers which will be appointed by the Cabinet, the General Auditor who shall be a permanent member of the Council and will act as a link between the Council and Internal Control Management and a fifth member similar to that of the Internal Control Council of the European Commission, aiming to utilize the experience of internal control from the private sector, will be a professional accountant from the private sector and will be appointed, following suggestion by the Minister of Finance, by the Cabinet.
