The German lawmakers would not approve any aid to Cyprus unless the Mediterranean country conformed to EU rules on transparency and money laundering, Michael Fuchs, a deputy leader for Merkel's Christian Democrats, stated today.

In his statements to Reuters, Mr. Fuchs said that even in his party there are disagreements for the financial aid to Cyprus.

Mr. Fuchs – known for his strict statements about issue concerning Greece – stated that it would be just as difficult to win approval from his conservatives for a Cyprus aid package as it would be from their coalition partners, the Free Democrats (FDP), who expressed doubts on Wednesday.

“In the conservative parliamentary group, the situation is just as problematic as in the FDP," Fuchs said.

“If Cyprus is not ready to adopt EU rules on transparency and money laundering, then there won't be any aid for Cyprus”, he added.

His statements followed those of the main opposition party (SPD) that they would not approve any aid to Cyprus to support Russian oligarchs.

Similar statements were made recently by the FDP leadership, who are in a coalition government with the Christian Democrats.

The new Greek memorandum was approved recently by the German lower house of sheer majority of Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and the Greens.

At the same time, the Cypriot side informs its eurozone partners on issues relating to the tax system of Cyprus and money laundering.

Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly is currently briefing the ambassadors and the financial advisors of the Embassies of the EU member states.

Mr. Shiarly is accompanied by the representative of the Unit for Combating Money Laundering (MOKAS), the Senior Counsel of the Republic, Mrs. Eva Papakyriakou, the spokesman of the Central Bank of Cyprus of Cyprus and the representative of the Inland Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance.

The presentation concerns issues related to the debt sustainability of Cyprus (Debtsustainability), the policy of combating laundering in Cyprus (Anti-moneylaunderingpolicy) and the exchange of information in tax matters (Exchange ofTaxInformation).
