Cooperation in the field of energy and investment was discussed during separate meetings held between Cypriot and Kuwaiti Ministers, during an official visit to Kuwait by Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.
Minister of Finance Harris Georgiades and Minister of Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Giorgos Lakkotrypis, held Tuesday a series of separate meetings with their counterparts from Kuwait, with whom they discussed the country’s participation in Cyprus’ energy plans, as well as in the investment sector.
According to an official press release, in statements after the meeting he held with Minister of Oil of Kuwait, Lakkotrypis said they exchanged views on Cyprus’ plans to exploit its hydrocarbon reserves in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The Cypriot Minister extended an invitation to his Kuwaiti counterpart to visit Cyprus and discuss how Kuwait could get involved in the energy plans of Nicosia.
He expressed hope that a delegation of government officials from Kuwait could soon visit Cyprus to discuss investments, “especially in the private sector, in major projects which need funding, such as marinas, golf, medical tourism and renewable energy sources”.
According to Lakkotrypis, the two countries discuss prospects of cooperation so that Cyprus is exploited by Kuwait due to its geographical position as an oil transit point in Europe.
Referring to the agreement in the field of tourism he signed today, Lakkotrypis said it aims at attracting more tourists to Cyprus.
Lakkotrypis also held a meeting with his counterpart, the Kuwaiti Minister of Commerce, during which he raised the issue of air links between the two countries, which could increase tourism.
“It could also give us the opportunity to increase our exports to Kuwait, which is a country that relies almost 100% on the import of food”, he concluded.
