Italy will continue to support the sovereign right of Cyprus to exploit its natural resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone, said today the President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, stressing that this was a promise by the Prime Minister of Italy Mario Monti.
In his statements after his meeting with the Italian Premier, in his office in Rome, President Christofias said; “I had, as expected, a very friendly meeting with Prime Minister Monti, in which we reviewed the bilateral relations between the two countries and jointly expressed our satisfaction for the level of bilateral relations. We found that there is further scope for developing these traditionally friendly relations as well as the trade and other exchanges”, he said.
“I informed him on the Cyprus issue and we discussed the situation in the Middle East and Cyprus’s position”, he stressed.
“At the same time, we exchanged views on our common problems: the financial crisis and the condition that our countries are in”, he added.
“We firstly ascertained the coordination between our Ministers in several European meetings and the coordination between the two countries will continue because we have common views and on the Multiannual Financial Framework, the Common Asylum System and various other issues.
“I am also pleased also to say that I had the promise that Italy would continue to support the sovereign right of Cyprus to exploit our natural resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone”.
“I'm really pleased by the meeting with the Prime Minister, he was very friendly, and we see ahead”, he said.
The meeting between President Christofias and Prime Minister Monti, which lasted about 45 minutes, was attended by the Minister of Communications and Works Efthimios Flourentzou, the Minister of Education and Culture, George Demosthenous, the Ambassador of the Republic in Rome Leonidas Markides and other officials.
