Despite high temperatures, the demand for electricity is not particularly high due to the fact that it is a holiday period, the deputy press spokesperson of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO), Hara Kousiappa, told CNA on Monday, noting that there was sufficient energy supply.
According to Kousiappa, maximum power consumption on Monday was expected to reach around 980 megawatts, despite the heat, since it is the holiday season and many people are away from cities and their work places.
She noted that, on non-working days, including weekends, and periods when many people are not in the cities, demand is always lower.
She said that on July 24 a record of 1243 megawatts was recorded while, currently, despite that high temperatures were expected, the peak demand was expected to be around 980 megawatts. On Sunday, the peak demand, recorded at 4 pm, was 901 megawatts, while last Friday, 11/8, the peak demand, even though it was a working day, it was 998 megawatts at 2.45 pm, Kousiappa said.
Kousiappa also said there was sufficient energy supply and that they did not expect any problems except in the case of a serious technical problem.
Regarding the contribution of renewable energy sources (RES), Kousiappa said that at around 2.30 pm on Monday, it was expected to be around 350 megawatts.
