According to the Passengers’ Survey, the residents of Cyprus travelling abroad in July soared 12.9% (15.7 thousand) to 137,419 compared to 121,708 in the corresponding month of 2007.

This increase is attributable to the increased trips to the United Kingdom and Israel. Trips to the UK climbed 22.1% or 4.4 thousand to 24.4 thousand, while those to Israel rose by 1.4 thousand to 3.5 thousand.

Trips to Greece, Cypriots’ most popular destination, inched up 0.5% to 57.5 thousand compared to 57.2 thousand last year. Trips to Syria and Lebanon recorded an increase too, while those to Egypt fell.

Overall, 69.6% of the trips were for leisure, 13.7% for professional reasons and 13.6% for educational purposes. 56.9% of the passengers were women and 43.1% men.

In January – July 2008, Cypriots’ trips abroad rose 17.6% to 666,488 from 566,725 in the corresponding period of 2007.
