Tourist arrivals for January 2004 dropped by 5.1% to 56.504 compared to the corresponding period of 2003 (59,529) due to the slump in British tourist arrivals by 14%, which constitute 60% of the total tourist arrivals for 2003. The drop in the Russian and Irish tourist arrivals by 22% and 20% respectively contributed heavily to the negative climate in the tourist industry.

On the other hand, Greek and German tourist arrivals showed an increase of 21% and 11% respectively, followed by Switzerland with an increase of 30% and Norway of 91%. The volume of tourist arrivals of the latter is particularly low.

Hoteliers’ Association STEK General Manager, Phidias Karis told StockWatch that the latest development is alarming, given that January 2004 was not affected by war rumours, similar to those in January 2003. It is noted that by December 2003, British tourist reservations for the summer season were lower.
